DUCHESSE : Johnny Geroudis, four classics in the bag

Si Gilbert Rousset et Soodesh Seesurrun savouraient leur septième victoire dans la Duchesse et que Johnny Geroudis en était à sa première, le Sud-Africain a profité de l’occasion pour ajouter une quatrième victoire classique dans l’escarcelle.
En effet, Johnny Geroudis avait remporté sa première Maiden Cup avec Evader (1991) avant de doubler la mise en 2010 avec Captain’s Knock. Il a aussi connu deux réussites dans la Coupe d’or avec Disa Leader (2010) et Green Keeper (2011). La Barbé Cup lui avait souri avec Disa Leader en 2011. Il ne lui manquait que la Duchesse pour réaliser la passe des quatre épreuves classiques. C’est fait depuis dimanche dernier.
« I’m very happy to have finally bagged my first Duchess. After the Barbe Cup, the Gold Cup and the Maiden, it was high time to win the Duchess, isn’t it? (laughs). I always thought Solo Traveller was the best horse in the race. I made a decisive move just before the road as they were not going that fast. I always thought that if ever they go slowly, I would have to make a move. It worked for me as it could have worked against me as well. At the end of the day, it proved to be a winning move. The distance was definitely a little bit too short for him. What he did was thus simply special », a-t-il tenu à souligner.  
Solo Traveller se retrouva à l’arrière-garde dans la partie initiale. Il était en fait bien en retrait. Mais cette position n’inquiéta pas trop Johnny Geroudis en dépit de la position avancée de Tales Of Bravery.
«Well, I knew my horse has not got that much gate speed. I was happy with my 8th barrier as it gave me all the latitude to see what was going on in front and do whatever I wanted. The pace slowed up very quickly and that’s where I made my move. »
A la question de savoir si la semaine supplémentaire — la Duchesse ayant été renvoyée — a joué en faveur de Solo Traveller vis-à-vis de ses adversaires, le Sud-Africain répondra par la négative.
« Not really as Monday we were under water, Tuesday we had only light work done. No, I won’t say the supplementary week advantaged us. I think had the Duchess been run on the date initially scheduled, it would have produced the same result. »
Johnny Geroudis a tenu à remercier celui qui a aidé l’écurie Rousset à procéder à l’acquisition de Solo Traveller.
« I am very thankful to Mike de Kock who, back in South Africa, gave us a helping hand in trying to get this horse. The owners put in their money and I’m delighted for them. It’s a very good team effort. I think he has a bright future here in Mauritius.»
Après cette première victoire classique et au vu de sa prestation, les turfistes se demandent si Solo Traveller n’est pas en mesure de remporter les quatres épreuves phares du calendrier.
« I really don’t know. Polar Bound, Top Seller and even Tales Of Bravery did not disgrace and according to me we are yet to see their very best.»
