As International Women’s Day 2024 approaches, themed “Inspire Inclusion” it marks a pivotal moment for women globally to unite, amplify voices, and champion gender equality. Yet, amidst celebration, it’s time for some soul- searching questions. Are we authentically inclusive? or are we paying mere lip service to women’s causes. The gap between rhetoric and reality must be understood otherwise, equality and inclusion will always remain a mirage.

In the era of mainstream Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT, the gender digital gap threatens to marginalize women in these fields. Beyond sectors, let’s holistically address women’s inclusion, acknowledging cultural influences, bias, office politics and bullying, societal expectations, and the challenge of juggling multiple roles they face. Mauritius grapples with gender disparities, with very few women in leadership positions across all sectors. In a small island state  with an ageing population, lack of skilled labour and limited resource, the formidable prowess of women cannot be ignored. Their influence sparks economic growth, innovation, societal well-being, peace, nurturing prosperity and stability.

There are remarkable stories of gender equality in Western nations.  Iceland, and Finland exemplify gender parity. These nations, consistently rank among the happiest globally with a good quality of life. What have these countries done to uplift women’s status. They have enforced structured leadership training cultivating inclusive workplaces, put in place work-life balance and flexible working, maternity and paternity leave, affirmative action and quotas, anti-harassment measures and legislation advocating women’s rights and equal opportunities. Mauritius can emulate these strategies, as now gender equality is no more a moral obligation but an economic necessity.

At the same time, we must also recognize the ill-effects of gender-based violence and the importance of women’s mental health and well-being.

Together, let’s transform the vision of women’s inclusion into a concrete reality. We must rewrite the narratives of women, from all walks of life, ensuring no one is marginalized in our pursuit of equality. Let’s forge a future where empowerment knows no bounds, where every woman’s voice resonates with power and purpose. Happy Women’s Day 2024!
