For a time, we were ‘We’;
back in history
being one community
was a way
that held sway,
reciprocity, mutuality
assured
in organic solidarity.
That did not hold
for long, as progressively
‘We’ split into ‘Me’ and ‘You’,
even antagonistically,
some competitiveness
a necessary catalyst
for progress of a sort,
no longer interdependent,
the nexus turned mechanical
and transactional.
Now in an acute existential
crisis, with nemesis at large,
even when safely distant
sentiments converge,
a common threat
proving humbling,
to a collective cause rallying,
one’s perilous plight
another’s fright.
