I believe I am not the only one struggling with the expressions and threats of modern society: ChatGPT, the war between Russia and Ukraine – and modern dating. I discussed the topic of love and war in my article, Fer lamour, pa lager, published in July 2022 in this newspaper. It is today more relevant than ever.
I will save the topic of ChatGPT and the emergence of Artificial Intelligence for one of the next articles. Although it may be the coming technological revolution which many of us have fear – or hope for – I believe there is still some time left to look into this chapter of our brave new world.
I dedicate this article to all women in Mauritius – young, middle-aged and older, and want to say a few words of appreciation before I share my thoughts on modern dating, first published in my new book Who wants love?
I want to remind you: you are the source of life. You hold families together. You do not only feed them but also dedicate your life to your children, husband or partner, and the elders. You often work the whole day, prepare your children for kindergarten or school, help them with their homework, cook in the evening, and dedicate the few minutes you have left of your day to your husband or relatives – listening patiently to their struggles, and console them when they are in pain.
Do not give up even if you struggle yourself! Maybe those around you only see your warm smile and strength as a woman. Perhaps they admire your work ethic and how you care for the family. Maybe none of those things, and you feel underappreciated because everyone around you takes for granted what you give to them: love, food, care and encouragement. I may not be able to dry your tears. Still, I can voice here that I genuinely admire Mauritian women for their strength, dignity, ability to suffer and endless patience for others.
Embrace yourself when those around you do not see the challenges in your life. Know that you are enough, even if you believe you are currently not your best self. Love yourself! Appreciate and value yourself. I am sending you love and light on your special day!
Perhaps you would like to share my thoughts on modern dating with your daughter, niece or a good friend who struggles to find fulfilling and lasting love in her life. You may need encouragement yourself as a single woman, divorced or widowed. We all need love and should not give up, even if the quest for love is a journey through the darkness. Please remain hopeful for genuine love in your life so that you may find the light at the end of the tunnel.
Yours truly.
